Music is in her blood. Laura Hayes began performing at a very young age, under the guidance of her grandfather. Laura and her sister used to perform with Grandpa Hayes at community and family functions. He taught Laura how to sing and how to enjoy singing for other people, and that joy is evident in every performance.
Laura was born in Lafleche, Saskatchewan, and grew up on a farm northwest of Laporte…surrounded by livestock, farming, family and music. Her favourite pastimes were singing and being with animals. When she wasn’t riding horses, or working with her 4-H calves, Laura was singing. She took piano lessons as a young girl and guitar lessons later in life. She played clarinet and saxophone in school, and enjoyed any instrument. Today, she continues to play guitar and piano.
As soon as she finished high school, Laura moved to Calgary and earned a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from Mount Royal College. Before even graduating, Laura landed a job at the number one news station in Calgary, where she worked for eight years. Most of her time was spent as a Reporter, a job that allowed her to constantly meet and talk to new people…something she loves doing.
Laura enjoyed her career, but knew singing was her true passion. She entered many contests in Calgary and across Alberta, and even placed second in a province-wide competition. Laura got a thrill out of competing, but started to feel something was lacking. So she put pen to paper and found her true calling was in singing songs she writes herself. Laura takes great pride in writing her own songs…with lyrics that are honest and down to earth.
Laura’s life has come full circle now, as she and her husband are raising their own family in Saskatchewan. She has returned to the prairie roots that have such a strong influence on her performances and songs.
